Project Description

Location: Indian Beach – Sarasota, Florida
Category: Residential
Year: 2018
Project Team: Damien Blumetti - Principal Architect

The concept for the renovation was to reinvent a home in the Indian Beach Neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida, by adding additional space and a design program that aptly responded to the regional qualities of the Gulf Coast. The primary conceit of the renovation was to create a new facade without compromising the exterior of the original 1960s structure. A wood-louvered screen wall was utilized to add a new dimension while providing privacy for the updated first-floor exterior terrace. The expanded entry is now a two-story space with an operable glass curtain wall of the same height.

The interior living space has been redesigned to fit the client’s needs. On the first floor, the master bedroom was expanded to accommodate a more efficient layout, including an enlarged bathroom and private study. Large overhangs and a private master bedroom terrace were added to the south facade to protect from the afternoon sun and project views to Sarasota Bay. The existing roofline on the first floor was extended to the east to accommodate the additional space on the first floor, thus adding a new character to the south facade. By using the existing footprint of the house—apart from an enlarged garage—a minimal number of trees were required to be removed or replaced. The site stays undisturbed, creating a sustainable model for renovations in this historic neighborhood.
