Located 100 yards south of the owner’s primary residence on Casey Key in Osprey, Florida, the Boathouse was conceived as a space to congregate before and after boating in the Gulf of Mexico. The second story features a large, oceanfront entertainment area, kitchen, bathroom, and control room, while the lower level offers storage for boat supplies and access to the interior elevator. Steel was selected as opposed to block and stucco, as the design called for minimal local construction, rapid assembly on sight, and energy-independence.
The primary conceit of the Boathouse is its modular exterior panels. Due to the orientation of the site, and the client’s fascination with dynamic structures, a program of ten hydraulically operated garage doors infilled with perforated aluminum panels was incorporated. From the second-floor control room, the owner can toggle what doors are open and to what degree depending on the weather and the activities taking place within. The structure can therefore come to life when desired, and hibernate when not in use. By utilizing Tesla solar panels and battery-operated lighting and climate-control systems, the net result satisfied the client’s request of being effectively off-grid.
